Olympic champion Viviani confirmed for Six Day London
21 August 2019
Olympic champion Elia Viviani will thrill Phynova Six Day London fans as he makes his debut at the fifth edition of the event, to be held in the capital this October.
The Italian sprinter is a master craftsman on the track and the road, boasting nine individual stage wins at Grand Tour events and eight major championship gold medals in the velodrome.
Viviani, nicknamed Il Veggente, has enjoyed a standout 2019 with wins at the European Road Race and the Ride London-Surrey Classic, coupled with his first Tour de France individual stage win.
Viviani said: “This will be my first Six Day Series event and I’m delighted to be coming back to London later this year to race against a highly competitive and world class field in a truly iconic arena.
“I’ve heard how unique Six Day is from other riders on the tour, and the electric atmosphere created by the fans, so I’m really excited.”
Viviani shot to fame as a 22-year-old in 2011, taking home medals at both the World Championships and European Elite Championships.
The 30-year-old has enjoyed a healthy rivalry with British Olympian Mark Cavendish MBE for years both on the road and track.
Viviani edged out Cavendish after a crash brought both men to the floor in the omnium at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, seeing the Italian take the gold medal.
The Verona-born star shows a mastery of all disciplines required to be a complete Six Day rider. He has medalled on the global stage in the scratch race, points race and Madison.
The Six Day Series returns to London for a fifth consecutive year, hosted at the iconic velodrome at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park between 22-27 October.
