A piece of cycling history was made on the opening night of Phynova Six Day London as iconic sponsor Molteni launched their first competitive jersey in over 40 years.

British cyclists Adam Blythe and Jon Dibben, competing together at this week’s event, were selected to model the retro jersey at the Lee Valley Velodrome.

They were walking in the footsteps of Eddy Merckx, no less, who starred in Molteni’s professional road racing team across the 1960s and 70s.

The famous Italian salami manufacturer sponsored the highly successful team that won 650 races in its 18 years.

The rebirth of the Molteni jersey is simple but striking – a distinctive brown colour married with a dark blue strip across the chest.

It is a classic symbol of the sport’s golden age and resonates with cycling fans across the world.

Blythe and Dibben were enthused by the chance to model the famous jersey in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Blythe, 29, said: “We are honoured to represent Molteni here at Six Day London.

“It’s quite a lot of pressure to fill such big shoes but it is such a special occasion for us both.”

Dibben added: “It’s very exciting to wear the Molteni jersey.

“It feels very special to wear the same jersey that the likes of Eddy Merckx wore 40 years ago. I’m really looking forward to getting out there and racing in it.”
